Furyu (1961) and Aware I (1961) by Jean Degottex are part of the new exhibition “Painting the Essential: Surrealism and the East” organized by the Centre Pompidou and the West Bund Museum at the West Bund Museum in Shanghai from 29 April to 24 September 2023.

Featuring works by Jean Degottex, Joan Miró, André Masson, Zao Wou-ki, Judith Reigl, and Simon Hantaï, among others, this exhibition sheds new light on Surrealism, its tendency toward abstraction, and its dialogue with the East.

The exhibition also includes the series of 12 Roses on paper in which Degottex explore the form of the word “rose” playing on all its meanings (flower, word, color).
